La Nuova Hiunday IONIQ (articolo in Inglese)

The new Hyundai IONIQ not only makes e-mobility accessible for many company car drivers, it also democratises advanced safety technology. It was awarded 5 stars by Euro NCAP – a top rating independently and unequivocally reflecting the IONIQ’s class-leading protection level.

With Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Smart Cruise Control as standard in every IONIQ, Hyundai’s new eco car was bound to get top ratings in any safety assessment programme. Euro NCAP independently evaluates vehicle safety in four categories – Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist (active safety). For all four of them, the IONIQ passed with flying colours.

That is no small feat, however. As a matter of fact, without the presence of advanced crash-avoiding systems, it is impossible for a car today to achieve 5 stars. The maximum score from Euro NCAP underlines the benefits of Hyundai Motor’s approach to democratising technology. State-of-the-art active safety features are fitted as standard in all versions, making the IONIQ one of the most protective cars in its segment and a safe and accessible e-mobility choice for all customers.

A guardian angel and cost avoider

The IONIQ’s standard Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system uses front radar and camera sensors to detect vehicles or pedestrians in front of the car. It operates in three stages. Initially warning the driver visually and acoustically, it controls the brake according to the collision danger stage and applies maximum braking force just before the moment of collision should the driver not react. Result: it avoids a collision or minimises damage when a collision is otherwise unavoidable.

The Lane Keeping Assist system including Lane Departure Warning alerts the driver if the car crosses road markings. It even steers the car back to the centre of the lane in case the driver does not respond to the alert. Equally contributing to the 5-star rating was the Smart Cruise Control. It keeps a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by accelerating or braking automatically. The Advanced Smart Cruise Control in the IONIQ Electric also enables stop-and-go functionality – a true stress reliever in heavy traffic.

Active technologies for passive safety

When a crash is unavoidable, you can count on the light yet rigid body of the IONIQ for protection. Its advanced design and construction methods together with a chassis featuring 53% Advanced High Strength Steel guarantee an optimum impact energy absorption and minimised distortion. Body structure improvements, complemented by a high-strength fibre-reinforced rear bumper, make the entire IONIQ line-up strong and durable.

A total of seven airbags are positioned around the interior of the IONIQ, including a knee airbag for the driver – another factor that was central to the positive Euro NCAP test result. In conclusion, whether you choose the IONIQ Hybrid, IONIQ Electric or IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid (available in 2017), you can rest assured that you get class-leading protection across the entire line. Add to that a comprehensive array of comfort, convenience and connectivity items and there is no denying that the IONIQ is a truly attractive and convincing alternative to conventional cars.
